🍨 The Inside Scoop : Michael Tam 🇭🇰

Get to know more about Michael Tam, the Global Design Director at IBM iX.  He is currently mentoring Career Advice, Interview Techniques, Leadership, Portfolio Review on ADPList platform.

How did you get started with your career as a Designer?

My journey started years ago in the advertising world. I was an Art Director who worked my way up in multiple international ad agencies like DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi, BBDO and Leo Burnett, etc. Along the way, I was fortunate to have great bosses to guide me in thinking strategically and slowly became a skilled storyteller. As a Creative Director, I left ‘Adland’ 6 years ago and pivoted into the UX world. Soon I joined IBM iX to help transform enterprises by placing the human at the centre of Strategy, Design, and Technology.

Why did you decide to mentor on ADPList?

When the Pandemic hit, it was a real tough time for everyone. And I was looking for ways to give back to the world in ways that I know best. ADPList came along and provided me with the perfect platform that I was looking for - the ADPList team is serious, cares about quality, and always focuses on giving value back to the world. As mentioned before, I was fortunate to have great mentors throughout my career. So to honour them, I want to pass on all that I have learned. Hopefully, that would help us all to move the world forward!

What is your favourite Mentoring story so far?

The truth is, I don’t have one yet! I love how each time I get to discover a new story about my mentee, their struggles, and most importantly, how they view the world. And to me, that’s the biggest takeaway as a mentor. So I think my favourite mentoring story would always be the next one!

What is the best advice you can give to a mentee?

Never give up. Have that hunger to keep learning about the world, stay curious, and when you get knocked down, keep getting back up, keep refining your craft, keep taking initiatives, keep showing up. Never give up.
